I have been making jewelry from discarded objects since 2014 under the brands Body Parts and grey jays jewelry. Since the close of my business and move to Portugal in 2022, I've shifted to creating with recycled aluminum and am working on a low-waste jewelry casting process with the metal. My jewelry has always served as a conversation starter for a broader issue; the harms the jewelry industry plays in the climate crisis. The mining and jewelry industries have long been seeped in environmental and human harm. I believe these issues must be addressed by industry and makers in order to instill concrete change. The materials we use from across the supply chain in the jewelry making process matter.
